Friday 16th of February Gone Fishin Report

Kings Of The Sea!

“Because it’s ripper afternoon” was a good enough excuse for great customers Jarrod and Luke to duck around the Western entrance and target some kings.

It wasn’t long after he had put his spread out that his whole calamari he had caught just moment before got absolutely slammed!

With some experience behind the wheel, the boys managed so steer this fish away from the shallow reefs and land it successfully.

Good job boys!

A 3-way hook up out off the western entrance was enough to create some organised chaos for customers, Craig, Aaron, Ritchie and Nassi .

The boys said that "it was all happening" when their dead baits which were slowly trolled got slammed by a pigeon pair of solid kings and at the same time Aaron hooked up to another thumping fish that he hooked on a River2Sea popper off the front of the boat!

with a bit of luck and experience behind the rods, the boys managed to weave their way out of what could've ended up in a tangled mess and land all three fish!

A dream to land a Victorian kingfish became a reality for young-gun Dylan who was fishing on board Unreel fishing charters out in the Rip.

It didn't take long at all for Dylan before his whole squid was inhaled by this solid king and had his drag screaming!

Well done Dylan and Happy birthday from the team at Gone Fishin!

Late Season Snapper!

How's this for a pair of reds?

Great customer Deano did a little recon mission out off Mornington last week when he came across this small patch hungry snapper!

Deano reports that he had to berley hard to get the fish to feed but the window of opportunity was very short with both fish being landed within 5 minutes of each oath.

Well done Deano!

We have had some great reports of snapper out in the bay over the last few days and skipper, James Rogers from Unreel has been getting in amongst the action!

James reports that most of his marks around the Mt Eliza and Mornington area had fish on them with most fish averaging in the 40-50cm mark with the occasional fish in the 3-4kg bracket being caught.

King George Whiting!

Customers Jenny and Alex got out and fished up the top end of Westernport and caught some lovely whiting to 37cm out of the Warneet channel.

The pair report that the high tide was most productive with fresh Mussel being the best bait for the day.

Good customers Zac and Dale got onto a nice patch of fat whiting up the top end of the middle spit last weekend.

The boys report that it was very hard work and required multiple changes of location in order to find the fish.

Staff member Kozi and his brother, Yuta have been picking up a few cod in the Seymour area over the past few weeks.

The boys have been fishing the morning bite using surface lures such as the Tiemco Slug-fest and Custom Craft Jaws lures.

How's that for a trout-cod!?

Great customers Cody and Rhys got away along the Goulburn river a couple of weeks ago and nailed some sizeable Murray cod including this 68cm Trout-cod!

Cody was over the moon with his catch especially when the fish ate his home-made surface snake lure!

(All fish were released after a quick happy snap!)

Boss-man Danny and all-round good guy, Patto snuck out for a quick flick in the Latrobe river and caught some nice browns.

The boys were throwing some small profile hard body lures such as the Nories Laydown minnow, Ecogear MX48 and Daiwa DR minnow with the gold and silver based colours working a treat on the day.

East Gippsland!

Regular customer (pretty much part of the furniture) George, escaped the busy Melbourne crowd and got away to Lake Tyres for a couple of nights for a bit of "me time".

A nice relaxing walk along the flats with a rod in hand produced a few dusky flathead for tea.

George was flicking a 4 inch Z-man SwimmerZ soft plastic in black and gold.

Wow what a fish!

On a recent trip away to Lake Tyres, regular customer Joel landed this absolutely  prehistoric looking, shovel-headed dusky from Mill Point.

Joel was working the edge of the flats using 6inch paddle tail soft plastics with 1/4oz jig heads and maintaining bottom contact at all times.

Awesome fish Joel!

Once again good customer Cody has made his way up to Tyres along with Dan and Adam to chase some of the local frogs!

The boys camped down at the glass house for a few days and found that the morning bite was the most productive time with overcast conditions.

Multiple fish were landed each morning with large soft plastics and soft vibes working a treat.

A father and son trip to Gippsland lakes over the weekend saw that pair hook up to some awesome dusky flathead along the drop offs and shallow weed beds.

Peter Miller and his son Brodie caught fish to 73cm along with many fish in the 45cm to 60cm bracket!

Former staff member Rob Bleumink fished the recent Vic bream Cassic at Metung with his new fishing partner Paul Gardner and placed in the top 10!

The boys had a tough pre-fish on the Friday but managed to boat a few fish that gave them a game plan for the comp.

The stand out lures for the boys were the Double clutch 60SP and 75SP in Black sniper and ghost wakasagi along with the OSP dunk lures.

Huge congratulations to the boys on their top 10 finish!

Awesome customer Tricky Micky (part of the furniture) escaped the windy conditions earlier during the week and fished the local Patterson lakes for a couple hours in the afternoon and got onto some nice bream.

Tricky was throwing the Daiwa DR minnow and double clutch 60SP around the pylons and floating pontoons with a slow roll method being the most effecting retrieve.

A late afternoon flick produced some nice bream for Daniel Guganovic last week up the back end of Patterson lakes.

Dan was fishing with hard body lures around the rock walls and flats just on dark with the DR minnow being the most effective lure for the night.

Staff member Kozi and his brother, Yuta once again snuck away to Gippsland lakes for a day trip fishing around some heavy cover of pylons and boat hulls.

The boys caught plenty of bream in the 27cm-37cm mark using grub style soft plastics. Kozi even managed a nice dusky on 3lbs line that measured in at 53cm.

All fish were released to fight another day!

Westernport Tuna!

The reports of these illusive tuna have started to flow through with plenty of people seeing tons of tuna off Flinders and the western entrance but with little success in hooking these fish.

Young Tristan from Unreel charters managed to hook into this solid tuna a few weeks back on a X-rap 20 in the redbait colour.

The fish was estimated to weigh around the 30kg-40kg mark.

Well done Tristan! What a fish!

With a mix of tuna and kingfish out between the western entrance and the port Phillip heads, it was a bit of a lucky dip for customers Mick and James Hussin. The boys threw the entire kitchen sink in the drink before switching to the old unweighted pilchard trick!

Not too long after the bait had drifted down the path of unwary tuna, the Gone Fishin Westernport rod had bent over and reel started screaming! After a long-fought battle, the boys had knocked over this fine specimen with a estimated weight of 40kg. Magnificent effort by the boys, well done!

Sent in by great customers Benny Love and Brendan Loizeau of this once in a lifetime Mulloway caught out of Westernport. The fish is estimated to top the scales at 40kg and measured in at a whopping 153cm! ... The boys fished the incoming tide using freshly caught squid heads rigged on a single 6/0 circle hook.

After a few attempts to release the fish, the exhaustion had gotten the better of this beast and couldn’t be revived.

Truly a once in a life time experience and congratulations to both Benny and Brendan on this epic capture!

Please feel free to contact the shop if you have any photos you would like to be entered into our weekly fishing report.

You can email them to or text them through to 0499-968-694 with some detail of who, when, where and what bait/lure was used.

Have a great weeks fishing! Stay safe and tight lines!
